Quod – the Sixth Form Common Room

Opened in September 2008 in the place of what was the old swimming pool, ‘Quod’ serves as a common room for the Sixth Form.  Gone are the ugly changing rooms and unpredictable temperatures and in are the sleek and modern sofas and solid oak floor.  Nestled right at the hub of school life, it is available both during the day and in the evening for the use of boys and girls.

During the day, sixth formers can utilise the shop’s facilities, serving tea, coffee and snacks, and with satellite TV and newspapers for intellectual fulfilment.  With its leather sofas and comfy chairs, as well as a useful workspace, it provides a space that our senior boys and girls can really call their own. It is a place where during the working day, they are able to relax and socialise, a place to drop in and out of and catch up with friends; its position allows it to act in tandem with the Moser Library and the ICT computer suite for academic work.

It is run by a committee of Sixth Formers who represent the differing houses (and both boarding and day interests) and who are charged with keeping the facility in good order and putting in place a calendar of exciting and entertaining social events

Just as important, however, is Quod in the evenings.  Replacing Tudor Court (the old Sixth Form bar), the Quod Committee organises events on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Regular events include live music, where pupils can show off their different and impressive ability, and film nights.  A Quod Fasti is produced each term, with events as a race night, pub quiz and even a fashion show in the offing.

As part of the cultural enrichment of the Sixth Form, regular talks, lectures and seminars are organised on a wide variety of topics.  In March 2009, a group of sixth formers went on a combined History/Classics trip to Italy.

Why is it called ‘Quod’?

The answer to this question has several possible answers.  One reason, for those who are up on their Latin, is simply ‘because’.  Another is that a former Head of School, referring to the Moser Quadrangle in which Quod stands, could not spell when canvassing opinion as to what it should be called.  Whatever the reason, Quod has, in the few months it has been open, become part of the fabric of school life.
