Football at Shrewsbury takes place mainly during the Michaelmas Term when almost all boys in the school play the game. The are 18 different School teams who play matches against other schools and an extensive house league programme for those who are not in the main school teams. The 1st XI enters both the Boodles Cup, winning the tournament in 2000, and the English Schools Trophy, reaching the semi-finals in 2001. The School has also won the Midlands Independent Schools League and the Shropshire Schools Cup on several occasions, and reached the last eight in the English Schools Football competition in 2008 (out of 640 schools). There is an annual development tour to Europe every August for the 1st XI and Under 15 Squads.
On the 100 acre site there are nine full-size grass pitches and an artificial Astroturf surface. Our 'Top Common' has full irrigation, which allows us to have first-class playing and training surfaces all year round.

Shrewsbury has a long and proud footballing history dating back to the origins of the sport. The oldest copy of the Laws of the Game in the world currently resides in the school's Moser Library, Salopians having played a prominent part in the meetings held to codify the game in the mid-nineteenth century. Many of the early Salopian footballers often reached full international status, in the days before the game became professional. The Old Salopians have won the Arthur Dunn Cup on many occasions, including the first, fiftieth and centenary finals. Shrewsbury School is proud to support the Shropshire Schools and Colleges Football Association (SSCFA) by sponsoring both the Shrewsbury & District Primary competetion and the Primary Schools cup, which also involves hosting the semi-finals of both competitions on our pitches. "For many years [Shrewsbury has] been a significant asset to our association in the provision of outstanding players and access to their pitches for representative football. They have always been generous in opening their doors to the wider community." - Alan Jones, SSCFA. The School was awarded ISFA Focus School status in 2009. This allows us to develop further, with support from ISFA, our own football development programme which will be delivered to our local state and independent schools. |
Our full fixture list is published in the summer, and lists each team's fixtures individually for the forthcoming season, along with other football-related information. Please be aware, though, that the fixture list below is more up-to-date.
This will be the 21st Shrewsbury School Prep. Schools' Six-a-Side Tournament - an annual event for Under 11s and Under 13s that takes place one Sunday afternoon towards the beginning of the Michaelmas term. It is a wonderfully colourful, lively and good-natured event that ends with the presentations, tea and refreshments in Quod, our Sixth Form common room.
