Holiday Courses

The end of term at Shrewsbury isn't the start of a long holiday for our staff, many of whom are involved with the various courses and activities that are run here and are open to everyone.  Some courses are residential, making use of our boarding houses, others are not; some are run by our own staff, others are run by external organisations who have chosen Shrewsbury and its facilities as the most suitable venue for their course. 

The majority of the courses run in July and August, but we also run courses over the Easter holidays, and other courses sometimes run over half terms and in the evenings and weekends.  Details will be posted on this page as and when future course details become available.

Half Term Cricket course - Summer 2012

Half Term: Wednesday 6th June to Friday 8th June 2012 (£75)
Summer holidays Week 1: Monday 9th to Friday 13th July 2012 (£125)
Summer  holidays Week 2: Monday 6th to Friday 10th August 2012 (£125)

This summer, Shrewsbury School will be running cricket courses for children aged between 8 and 13 years.  The courses will be based in the School's purpose-built indoor cricket school and will run from 10am to 4pm each day, and will be led by our visiting Australian coach Ross Stephen, together with ECB qualified coaches.

Easter courses 2012

HD Sportsworld Football Tournaments
Under 13 and Under 14 Boys: 26th - 29th March 2012
Under 15 Girls: 29th March - 1st April 2012

HD Sportsworld's tournaments bring schools together from all over the UK to play in a series of high quality matches in a safe and professional environment. At the same time they allow the players to experience being part of a travelling squad.

The teams enjoy “Wall to wall soccer” with 8 fixtures and optional 5-a-side. An evening entertainment programme is also available for the children, alongside a staff programme and sportspersons dinner.

A final presentation of medals and trophies will be made, to award players and teams for their achievements during the tournament.

Royal Grammar School Worcester Rowing Camp
30th March - 5th April 2012

RGS Worcester are passionate about rowing. Pupils from RGS have gained national honours in rowing in recent years. For the past four years the entire squad have been accommodated at Shrewsbury for their Easter camp, their week long visit sees them making use of the boathouse, ergo room and the beautiful River Severn.

RSSBC: Pre-USA Trip - training

National Children’s Choir of Great Britain
1st - 11th April 2012

NCCGB courses are held twice each year, during the Easter and summer holidays.  All courses are residential. The children in the choir are able to join from ages 9 – 14, and an appropriate level of family care is offered for these young people. 

Each child is encouraged to develop their ability within a caring environment, with plenty of opportunites for practice and performance. Talented young singers from throughout the United Kingdom have the opportunity to work together and enjoy making music under the guidance of inspired teachers.  Please see www.nccgb.com for more information.

Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy Course (residential and day places)
2nd - 5th April 2012 (residential players will meet on 1st April)

Residential and day places cricket coaching course for boys and girls aged 5-16 years.  The fun, innovative and age appropriate coaching is based on the fundamentals that made Freddie Flintoff the great player he is; all coaches are ECB qualified.  

Former England cricketer Dominic Cork will be visiting the Academy on the first day, and all participants will have a chance to bowl at him.

This course is ideal for pre-season or in-season training, combined with a fun and worthwhile experience away from home. There will be opportunities for our cricketers to impress representatives from the host schools enough to earn trials for sports scholarships. Fun evening activities including swimming, football/basketball tournaments, quizzes and a DVD night.

King's School Worcester Rowing Camp
Senior Camp: 3rd - 6th April 2012
Junior Camp: 10th - 13th April 2012

The King's School Worcester Boat Club (KSWBC) is fortunate enough to have its own boathouse, which is based within the main school grounds on the River Severn, just downstream from Worcester Cathedral.

This year, due to extensive refurbishment to the KSWBC facilites, Shrewsbury School is happy to be hosting both the senior and junior squads for an intensive three day camp.

11th to 13th April 2012

The 2012 Pre-Season Cricket Festival - training and matches - takes place at Shrewsbury School between our 1st XI, Millfield, Worksop College and Worcester Academy.

Wigan Youth Orchestra
12th to 14th April 2012

For the first time, Shrewsbury School is delighted to welcome the Wigan Youth Orchestra. Wigan Youth Orchestra recently performed at the Disneyland Theatre in Paris, toured Holland in 2006 and Slovenia in 2008. They perform regularly throughout Wigan and the North of England.

Essentially a training ground for young musicians, the Orchestra aims to develop the skills of its members through performance. Their two-day stay here will be based around our purpose-built music venue, the Maidment Building, and will culminate in a final concert.

Shrewsbury School J14 Rowing Camp
15th - 16th April 2012

During the holidays we will be hosting our very own J14 rowers for an intensive two day camp out on the River Severn, preparing crews for future competition. Based in Moser's Hall, the group will eat, sleep and breathe rowing!


Other Courses

Children's Swimming Lessons
Weekly swimming lessons are run during term time for children aged between 4½ and 13 years.  Novice lessons are on Friday afternoons (first session is at 4pm) and last for half an hour.  Intermediate lessons are on Tuedays and last for 45 minutes.  The sessions cost £4 each, and are charged by the term.  For more information, please contact our Sports Office on 01743 280697 or email sport@shrewsbury.org.uk.
