Old Salopian Sport

Old Salopian Sport is alive, well and flourishing!

National competitions between School Alumni Clubs are some of the oldest trophies in the country, and Salopians have always been at the forefront in these.  The Arthur Dunn Football Cup, the Halford Hewitt Golf Championship, The Cricketer Cup and The Barber Fives Cup are just some examples, Shrewsbury Saracens winning the prestigious Cricketer Cup in 2012.

Annual events are always popular, for example the Saracens week at Kingsland and their Devon Tour, the OS Golfing Society meetings at Scotland, Birkdale, Hoylake etc; the Sabrina party at Henley, the Fives and Hunt meetings at Shrewsbury, and various annual end of season dinners.

In addition, there are league fixtures and supporters' gatherings throughout the year for some sports. The OS Sports Clubs also try and give as much support to School sport as possible, both by supporting the School teams at home and away fixtures, and in some cases by helping to fund the facilities at the School.

Young Salopians are always welcome to join sports clubs and most clubs will accept new members after people have left the School.  Female sports such as netball and hockey are also currently being developed as more players leave the School.

    Miles Preston's Rolls Royce Round Britain Tour, 6th - 23rd June 2017

    Calling all Salopians who are interested in having a close up look at some classic Rolls Royces and/or meeting up with other Salopians living in your part of the country.

    Between the 6th and the 23rd June Miles Preston (DB 63-68), President of the Sabrina Club, and his wife Jane in the company of 46 other Rolls Royces and their owners, will be taking part in a 1,500 mile tour of England, Wales and Scotland. This is to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the original Silver Ghost, AX201 and setting a new World Record of running, without involuntary stops, for a distance of 14,371 miles (almost twice that previously set by a motor car), and the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts’ Club. Please click on this link to see a map which shows their approximate route and dates.

    At four of the overnight stopping points, Miles is hoping that as many Salopians as are interested in getting together, will meet  at 5.00pm for tea and biscuits (free gratis!), to say hello and have a look at what will be a really interesting selection of Rolls Royces, including 15 Silver Ghosts and at least 21 pre Second World War cars (which will include his own H.J. Mulliner bodied 1933 Sedanca de Ville).

    The four venues are;

    1. Thursday, the 8th June. The Thurlestone Hotel ,Thurlestone, South Devon TQ7 3NN.

    2. Sunday, the 11th June. Ruthin Castle Hotel, Castle Street, Ruthin, North Wales LL15 2NU.

    3. Tuesday, the 13th June. Inn on the Lake, Glenridding, Penrith CA11 0PE.

    4. Wednesday, the21st June. The Old Swan Hotel ,Swan Road, Harrogate HG1 2SR.

    It would be lovely if you could join them for one of those evenings. All Old Salopians, spouses and partners, children/grandchildren very welcome.

    If you are able to go along, it would be very helpful if you could email Miles on miles.preston@milespreston.co.uk by the end of May to let him know (and to say how many will be in your party). This will help us to work out how many will be wanting tea.

     Miles and Jane will be joining all the other co-drivers for drinks each evening at 7.00pm for dinner at 7.30 so will have to end their Salopian get together by 6.30pm.

    If you cannot make it to one of these evenings because you live too far away, Miles and Jane are expecting to arrive at The Celtic Manor Resort, Coldra Woods, The Usk Valley, Newport NP18 1HQ on Saturday 10th June and Barnsdale Hall Hotel, Nr Oakham, Rutland LE15 8AB on Thursday 22nd June by about 5.00pm and would be happy to meet you at either of those venues to say hello and show you the cars, all of which should be there to inspect from about that time. Again, please could you email him if you are going so that he can look out for you.
