Meet the Housemaster...
Andy Barnard is appointed Housemaster of Port Hill from September 2011.
Andy joined Shrewsbury's Geography Faculty in September 2003, after 16 years at Kingsland Grange Preparatory School where he was Senior Master and Head of Geography.
Andy has built up an impressive reputation here as both a teacher of Geography and Curriculum Games, Master in Charge of Cricket and Master in Charge of Fives; he is also a qualified ISI School Inspector. Prior to becoming Housemaster of Port Hill, Andy was the Assistant Housemaster of Radbrook, our other Day Boys' house.
Under his leadership, the school cricket and fives have both progressed and developed significantly. In recent years our cricket teams have reached and won finals of a number of national tournaments including the Lords Taverners Colts Trophy, ESCA/ECB U15 20-20, HMC U18 20-20 and the Silk Trophy. School fives players have consistently won a string of national titles.
Andy has a long sporting career in rugby and cricket. He played at Liverpool RFC, Loughborough University & Wasps FC from 1978 to 1986 and played Minor Counties cricket for over twenty- five years from 1976.
He is Chairman of Shrewsbury Cricket Club and has participated in and led many successful sports tours to destinations all over the world.
He is married to Helen and they have three sons, Michael (OS 2006-2008 Rb), Stephen (OS 2009-2011 Rb) and Edward.
Helen has spent her career in teaching, and currently works part-time at Coleham Primary School where she has also served, for eight years, as a Governor and for several years as Chair of FOCS (PTA). During her career she has held Head Of Girls' PE and Head of Year (Pastoral) in large secondary schools. She played National League volleyball before moving to Shrewsbury, and sings in the Shrewsbury School Community Choir
Michael is in his third year at Oxford Brookes, Stephen is heading for a Gap Year in Perth, and Edward is in Year 11 at Meole Brace and is part of STFC Centre of Excellence and Worcestershire CCC Academy.
The Day Houses
The two boys' day houses - Radbrook and Port Hill - are run separately, each with their own identity, housemaster, and interior colour scheme! However, they are interconnecting and all day boys mix very freely between both houses. In most cases, entries are accepted for a place as a day boy, and the allocations of new boys to one of the two houses are made in the summer holiday immediately prior to starting.
Refurbishment of the Day Houses
In the summer of 2009, a major refurbishment programme was carried out in both Radbrook and Port Hill. In addition to carrying out significant structural work, updating the wet areas and changing facilties, both houses were redecorated and the boys' studies were given new desks and equipment.
