Religious Studies

More detail can be found about all of our academic faculties under the Curriculum sections of our website that cover the Third Form Curriculum, the Fourth Form Curriculum (leading up to GCSE) and the Sixth Form Curriculum

Religion still has a profound effect upon human society, motivating people to perform deeds of the best (and sadly sometimes the worst) kind, and also providing a path through life that is followed by many hundreds of millions of people. It continues to shape the social and cultural patterns of many countries around the world.  Its influence therefore runs deep, and a greater understanding of humanity will inevitably be afforded by a careful study of its nature.

Religious Studies at Shrewsbury attempts to take an objective approach to its subject matter. Our task is to highlight and put aside preconceptions in order to do two things. Firstly, to pursue a critical examination of religion in a rigorously academic fashion. Secondly, to gain (as far as this is possible) an insider's perspective and appreciation of each religion studied.

Our chosen tools are Philosophy and Ethics, which form a common strand through all years and all courses at Shrewsbury, with Christianity providing the context for our investigations.

Throughout the year our curriculum is enhanced and enriched by a number of speakers and events. This can happen in conjunction with other faculties, for example a major conference entitled "Biology and Belief" was hosted at Shrewsbury with the support of the Science Faculty. This brought together pupils from a number of schools to hear some of the most eminent speakers in their respective fields talk about Darwinism and and religion. More recently, our three Lower Sixth sets attended a day conference at Moreton Hall school, to hear talks from two eminent speakers on matters of Faith, Ethics and Belief. Outside speakers are also invited to contribute to lessons; for example, recent GCSE classes have been addressed by a Muslim lady leading discussions on Feminist issues and about the Middle East in general.
