Joining Shrewsbury from Overseas

Shrewsbury School crest

Every year, we are delighted to welcome pupils from around the world to Shrewsbury.

Pupils arrive from a wide range of countries, cultures and educational backgrounds, bringing fresh perspectives and enriching every aspect of School life.

For many families, choosing a boarding school overseas is one of the most significant decisions they will make. We understand that this is an exciting journey, and one that naturally comes with questions. From your first enquiry to your child's first day at School, our Admissions team will guide and support you every step of the way.

Wherever you are in the world, our aim is the same: to get to know your child as an individual and help you discover whether Shrewsbury is the right place for them to flourish.

Applying for Third Form (13+) and Fourth Form (14+)

Applicants for Third Form (Year 9) and Fourth Form (Year 10) entry sit Shrewsbury's own entrance assessments in English, Mathematics and, for 13+ applicants, French where it has been studied for more than one year.

We ask families to register before sitting the assessments, which are taken in November prior to entry the following September.

To make the process as straightforward as possible, examinations can be taken at Shrewsbury School or, where travelling to the UK is not practical, at the applicant's current school or another approved location, such as a British Consulate or a local law firm. Our Admissions team will work closely with you to arrange the most appropriate option.

Following the assessments, candidates are invited to meet a member of our Admissions team. Whenever possible, we encourage families to visit Shrewsbury in person so that they can experience the School and meet our pupils and staff. If this is not possible, we are pleased to arrange an online interview.

Offers are made following successful performance in the assessments, together with a positive academic reference and character reference from the applicant's current school. We aim to communicate examination outcomes within two weeks. Past examination papers are available on request to help pupils prepare with confidence.

Applying for Sixth Form (16+)

Each year, our Sixth Form welcomes talented pupils from schools across the world who bring new ideas, experiences and ambitions to our community.

Candidates sit four written entrance papers in their chosen subjects and attend an interview with one of our Admissions Tutors. As with all applicants, we encourage families to visit the School wherever possible, although interviews can also be conducted online when travel is not feasible.

Our Admissions team will be delighted to explain the application process, subject choices and entry requirements, and to support your family throughout every stage of the journey.

For full details of Sixth Form entry, please visit our Sixth Form Admissions pages.

Visa and Guardianship

Info for Overseas Entrants joining in September 2026

Guardians

All pupils who reside outside the UK are required to have a guardian, who will be expected to accommodate you in a home environment in the UK during exeats, Coach weekends and other holidays if you are unable to return home, and arrange any transport you may need.

Full details are outlined in our Guardianship Policy, which includes a Guardianship Agreement form that needs to be signed by your guardian and by your parents and returned. Please request from and return to [email protected].

Please note that we cannot issue a 'Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies' (CAS) number for your visa application until we have received this form.

Additional information and advice on guardianship can be found via AEGIS (The Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students), an organisation that inspects and accredits guardianship providers in the UK and works to promote the welfare of international students. Please see their website for further details: www.aegisuk.net.

Pupils residing outside the UK who require a Child Student Visa

All pupils who are resident outside the UK and who do not hold a British passport will require a Child Student visa in order to study at Shrewsbury School.

Please download and read our guidance notes for applying for a visa.

Shrewsbury School Visa Guidance

These notes explain the process of applying for a visa and specify the items you will need to supply to Shrewsbury School in order to receive your ‘Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies’ (CAS) number. This is important, as you will need to use this for your visa application.

Please note that if you have a Child Student visa from another UK school, this will not be accepted by Shrewsbury School. You will need to apply for a new visa under Shrewsbury School's sponsorship licence.

Pupils residing outside the UK who do not require a visa

If you are a British National living overseas, you do not require a visa to study at Shrewsbury School.

Once you have accepted your place at Shrewsbury, we will require the following items:

  • a copy of your passport (photo page)
  • our Guardianship Agreement form, signed by the guardian and by your parents, as outlined in our Guardianship Policy (see 'Guardians' section above).
  • A signed Parental Consent Letter (a template letter may be provided by Shrewsbury School upon request).

EU Settlement Scheme

If you are an EU or EEU citizen and have applied for settled or pre-settled status prior to 30 June 2021, we will require the following items:

  • Birth Certificate
  • a copy of your passport (photo page).
  • copy of the letter from the Home Office confirming your status.
  • Share code to prove your immigration status.
  • Our Guardianship Agreement form, signed by the guardian and by your parents, as outlined in our Guardianship Policy (see 'Guardians' section above), if applicable.

Pupils already resident in the UK who hold a non-British Passport

Once you have accepted your place at Shrewsbury, we will require the following items:

  • a copy of your passport (photo page)
  • a copy of any current permission you already hold to remain in the UK. For example, indefinite leave to remain, Tier 1 Investor or Dependent visa,
  • Parent's documentation with permission to remain in the UK.
  • our Guardianship Agreement form, signed by the guardian and by your parents, as outlined in our Guardianship Policy (see 'Guardians' section above), if applicable.

Current Fifth Form Students proceeding to Lower Sixth Form

Please note that Child Student visas are issued for the length of your course (i.e. 2-3 years for GCSE, or 2 years for A Level). Therefore if you are a current pupil at Shrewsbury School moving from Fifth Form to Lower Sixth, you will need to apply for a new Child Student visa before returning to school to begin your A Level studies in September, even if your existing visa has not yet expired.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

A number of pupils at Shrewsbury have a principal language other than English.

Among these pupils, there is a considerable range of abilities in the English language, from those who are effectively fluent (even though English is not their first language) to those who need some assistance.

All pupils who are admitted to Shrewsbury are required to pass an entrance examination, and pupils for whom English is an Additional Language will be expected to demonstrate a level of linguistic competence appropriate to their proposed course of study. This is to ensure that pupils who arrive at Shrewsbury all have sufficient competence in the English language to thrive in the community from the outset and to follow the Shrewsbury School curriculum which leads to GCSE and A Levels.

It is anticipated that, in the first instance, all pupils will follow the full school curriculum; however, the curriculum for pupils for whom English is an Additional Language may be reviewed on an individual basis, and this will occasionally result in pupils dropping one subject (usually a Modern Foreign Language).

Pupils for whom English is an Additional Language may receive extra English language tuition. This normally takes the form of a weekly lesson; in some cases, this is on an individual basis, whilst in other cases, pupils attend in small groups. This is, in addition, to support delivered by set teachers through curriculum English.

For more information, please see the English as an Additional Language Policy on our Policies page.
