Two Gala Orchestral Concerts for the end of the Lent Term – a message from John Moore
On Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th March, there are two evenings of wonderful music making in the Alington Hall featuring the School’s Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra and Strings. Central to the programme is a complete performance of Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto with Galin Ganchev the piano soloist, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra. This concerto is generally regarded as one of the single most difficult and beautiful of all 20th century piano concertos, full of gorgeous Russian melodies and wonderfully virtuosic piano writing. It represents a simply massive achievement by Galin that we are able to present this masterpiece at the School, and it cannot be recommended highly enough as a performance for people to attend.
Also in the programme are the New World Symphony by Dvorak – one of classical music’s most iconic and popular symphonies – and part of Bach’s enchanting Suite in B minor for Flute and Strings with soloist Ursule Taujanskaite, who is a Lower Sixth Music Scholar at the School. The Wind Orchestra is playing Dances from Crete by Adam Gorb, one of the UK’s leading composers. The programme is the same for both concerts, and they promise to be two evenings of simply wonderful musicianship and enjoyment from the talented young performers at the School. Tickets are free and available from Darren Wood on 01743 280810, www.ticketsource.co.uk/shrewsburyschool, or on the door.
