John Moore, Director of Music, has given Ali Webb (S UVI) the opportunity to host his own evening of entertainment in the Ashton Theatre, in which he will be performing some of his own material and other well-known covers.
Ali performed on Radio 2's 'Good Morning Sunday' programme when he was in the Fifth Form, and the host Aled Jones commented afterwards that "the feeling and emotion... absolutely fantastic!"
Ali has recently been awarded a scholarship from the internationally renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusets from September 2013. Considered to be the 'Oxbridge' of music colleges in the U.S., Berklee is the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world, known primarily as a school for jazz, rock, and popular music. To date, 99 Berklee alumni have received 221 Grammy Awards.
Ali will be accompanied by the full horn and string sections of our orchestra, Josh Smout on the drums, and a number of his school friends including special guest performances from Teresa Fawcett Wood (EDH UVI), Connie Osborne (MSH LVI), Daisy McConnel (EDH UVI) and Sienna Holmes (EDH UVI). The evening's programme will include several songs co-written with friends that Ali met at Berklee in the summer, as well as originals co-written with friends at school.
TV presenter, Carol Smillie, recently commented after Ali performed at the Quod Fashion Show that she hosted “Ali has an astonishing talent way beyond his years. Watching him perform; you are instantly transported to a better place. I could listen to him all day long!”
Ali added “My passion is music and my ambition is to become a professional performing musician – primarily as a singer/songwriter/pianist with a jazz-pop style. This evening will be a great opportunity to showcase some of the recent material I have written, whilst gaining further experience of performing in front of live audiences.”
Tickets for Ali's concert are free, and available from Darren Wood on 01743 280810.
