Two Old Salopians return to Shrewsbury to give an evening of songs exploring the fantastic world of the mind and the visions and dreams that it can unveil. A mixed programme with a wide range of repertoire, from Schubert and Fauré to Tom Waits and Richard Rodgers, Erlkönig and The Choirmaster's Burial to Lilac Wine and Hushabye Mountain.
David Cowan, now Head of Music at Opera North, studied at Cambridge, at the Guildhall in London and in Winterthur, Switzerland. He has conducted a large number of operas and operettas, including last season's La Cenerentola for Opera North, as well as the musicals Hairand Fame. He has performed as accompanist in recitals with many singers, including Simon Keenlyside and Dame Kiri te Kanawa. He also worked as guest coach and conductor in the Opera Houses of Lyon, Strasbourg, Palermo, Lisbon, Genoa, Dublin, and at the Royal Opera House, London.
After leaving Shrewsbury, Daniel Norman studied Engineering as a Choral Scholar at New College Oxford, and then went on to study singing and acting in the US and Canada and at the Royal Academy of Music. He has since established himself as a highly adaptable singer/actor able to encompass dramatic interpretations of the most demanding contemporary works currently in performance. Daniel sings regularly at the Oxford Lieder and Aldeburgh Festivals alongside appearances with ENO, Scottish Opera, Opera North, BBC Proms, Royal Opera and the Glyndebourne Festival. He appears on many recordings of opera, concert and song repertoire and has a major YouTube hit with his film version of Schubert's Erlkönig - a work he will be performing in this concert.
