Old Salopian interviewed on 'The Rest is History' podcast

The mysterious history of Soulton Hall which is owned by an Old Salopian and has strong links to Shrewsbury School is featured on a special episode of the world famous podcast: 'The Rest is History'.

Owner Tim Ashton (S 2000-05) discusses the secrets hidden within the walls of the house near Wem with historian Tom Holland and addresses some of the most interesting questions, including whether William Shakespeare visited the house and how relics found there might relate to the birth of Christianity in England.

Soulton was built by Sir Rowland Hill, a Tudor statesman and patron of the arts who was also involved in the founding of Shrewsbury School in 1552.

Tim was inspired to investigate the fascinating multi-layered history of his home when he studied Shakespeare's 'As You Like It' at Shrewsbury. He particularly credits his English teacher Michael Schutzer-Weissman for encouraging him with the project. 

It started with the house's links to Shakespeare and the character of 'Old Sir Rowland' but has gone on to encompass religious persecution, hidden messages in the geometry of the architecture and the possibilities that important religious artefacts saved from the dismantling of churches during the Reformation may have been brought to Shropshire.
