Lower Sixth pupil Lilly C-W (LVI, G) has continued an exciting period in her football development by making her debut for Shrewsbury’s Boys’ 1st XI this week.
Lilly came off the bench on Wednesday to make her first appearance for the side, adding another memorable milestone to what has already been a remarkable year in the game.
Reflecting on the moment she was called upon to enter the match, Lilly said there were some initial nerves, but they quickly disappeared once she stepped onto the pitch.
“I had a teammate there with me, which helped a lot. We were both a bit nervous, but when we came on, it was just football. It felt really good and it was really enjoyable to play the game.”
Lilly has continued to progress both within School football and at representative and club level. After playing for Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy last season, she has now signed for Shrewsbury Town Women in partnership with Wolves Women, giving her another opportunity to develop within the women’s game.
Earlier this year, she also represented the U16 Independent Schools’ national team, earning her international cap at the ISFA Girls’ Football Summer Camp. Her performances saw her retained in the U16 national squad for a second season, and she is now preparing for trials for the ISFA U18 Representative Team later this month.
Lilly describes how the opportunities and encouragement she has received at Shrewsbury have played an important part in her development.
“The standard is really good and the teachers and coaches are all so supportive. I’ve never felt alone, even though I feel like I’ve been pushed to a really good level.
“I’ve become a better person and player just being here at the School, and I’ve felt more than supported by everyone.”
Playing alongside the boys has provided Lilly with another opportunity to test herself and continue developing her game.
“It’s all about enjoying it every day, because if you enjoy it that much, it doesn’t really matter who you play with. I think the boys will always really push you and, at the end of the day, you just want to become a better player and person and keep going.”
Head of Girls' Football, Ellie Lyell, said:
“We are incredibly proud of Lilly and the progress she continues to make. Her debut for the Boys’ 1st XI is a true reflection her ability as well as her commitment, determination and positive attitude she brings to her football every day. Lilly is always looking to challenge herself and improve, and it has been fantastic to see her embrace every opportunity available to her."
