Walking together for The Shewsy

Shrewsbury has been reflecting on a memorable day in the Shropshire Hills, when the whole School community came together to walk 19 miles in support of The Shewsy.
Pupils and staff were joined along the route by friends from The Shewsy, sharing a day of walking, conversation and camaraderie, all with a common purpose: raising vital funds to support the youth club’s work with young people in Everton.
Reflecting on the day, Headmaster Leo Winkley, said:
“It’s lovely to be reflecting back on an astonishingly joyous day out on the Shropshire Hills, as the whole school walked the best part of 30 kilometres, raising funds for The Shewsy, with volunteers and staff from The Shewsy walking alongside us.”

For the pupils taking part, the day was about much more than completing the miles.
Head of School Ben F (O, UVI) said: “Walking in the Shropshire Hills last week felt like one of those moments that makes you grateful to be a Salopian.
“What really stood out was how the walk was more than an individual experience, but that of a collective effort in order to support a charity that does so much to support the lives of young people in the Everton area.
“Every pound raised for The Shewsy supports the youth work, relationships, opportunities and stability that it provides on a day-to-day basis. As a school, taking part in the sponsored walk meant not only enjoying a wonderful day in the outdoors, but also the occasion to contribute to such an important cause.”
Clara McA (EDH, UVI) similarly reflected on the sense of shared purpose across the School community.
“It was incredibly powerful to see the whole school come together as one, walking with a shared purpose to support a charity that makes such a meaningful difference,” she said.
“Knowing that our efforts and miles on the Longmynd would have a lasting impact on The Shewsy and all the children it supports made the experience especially rewarding. It certainly created a memory that we will all remember and cherish.”
The Sponsored Walk builds on a relationship between Shrewsbury and The Shewsy that stretches back generations. Funds raised through this year’s walk will support The Shewsy’s ongoing work with young people in Everton, as well as improvements to its sports hall and facilities.
Colin Scicluna, Operations Manager at The Shewsy, said walking alongside the School community had been “a great reminder of what makes the relationship between our two organisations so special”.
“The enthusiasm, commitment and energy shown throughout the day was remarkable, and there was a real sense of community and shared purpose from start to finish,” he said.
“Conversations along the route gave us the chance to share more about The Shewsy’s work, the young people we support and the challenges they face. The funds raised will make a lasting difference, helping us continue creating opportunities for young people in Everton while also contributing towards improvements to our sports hall and facilities.
“We are hugely grateful to everyone who walked, donated and supported the walk.”
That gratitude is shared across the whole Shrewsbury community. A huge thank you goes to every pupil and member of staff who took on the challenge, to The Shewsy team who joined us, to everyone who helped organise and support the day, and to the many families, Old Salopians, Governors, friends and supporters who have donated so generously.
