Almost 50 Old Salopians gathered together in the charmingly traditional setting of the St Paul's Club in Birmingham for yet another fabulous evening of dining and entertainment. Richard Woodgate (Rt 1954-59) acted as a magnificent host to OSs of all the generations, from those who had served more than 60 years as a member of staff (mentioning no names, Dr Gee) to members of the current sixth form.
There was a sparkling drinks reception, followed by a sumptuously traditional four course feast which included the unexpected addition of rice pudding with Walsall sauce. If you would like to know the secret recipe, you will need to attend next year!
After dinner, the group was treated to a very special recital by sixth formers Abi Watkinson (G), Dominic Sullivan (I) and Theo Jarvis (MSH), accompanied by John Moore (Director of Music). The talent, presence, composure and performing ability of all three were particularly praised by the Headmaster in his later speech, and was greatly appreciated by all those present.
After dinner, speeches were also made by Richard Woodgate and Nicholas Barber (SH 1954-58), as President of the Salopian Club, which particularly reflected on the ever-changing landscape of education.
Happily reunited with old friends, well-fed and well-watered, the group dispersed into the night, already looking forward to the return journey next year.
