The Grandhi family, who are the principals of the GMR Group in India, have a tremendous love of the sport of cricket and in fact own the Delhi Capitals of the IPL.
Headmaster Leo Winkley said, “Shrewsbury School has a cricketing soul and this love of the game is matched by that of the Grandhi family and indeed the sub-continent of India. We are delighted to have formed such a close relationship with GMR and thank the Grandhi family warmly for their support.”
The official ceremony to rename the GMR Cricket Centre took place on Speech Day, when a statue designed by the School's Design and Technology Department was unveiled by Speech Day Guest of Honour and former international cricketer Lucy Pearson.
Following the ceremony, Ritesh Grandhi then went on to play in the Speech Day Exhibition Cricket Match between the Upper Sixth and the Rest of the School XIs.
