Fourth former John Dempsey (Ch) has been selected for the North West Junior Orienteering Squad, after a trial two weeks ago and a run that highlighted him as a potential squad member at the British Orienteering Championships at the beginning of May. He will now be going on to train in Scotland and also in Norway this summer, and hopes to get selected for the Development Team in the future, with his eyes set ultimately on becoming part of the England Orienteering Team and competing at the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC).
John is a member of the Manchester and District Orienteering Club (MDOC), and has been competing for many years with his father and his brother. Last year, his team won a silver medal in the Mens' U18 relay event in the British Orienteering Championships - despite the fact that all the team members were under 16.
John is currently ranked no. 17 in the national Mens 16s, but orienteering isn't his only talent - he came to Shrewsbury in 2010 as an All Rounder and Music scholar and plays the flute to distinction.
