The West Midlands Regional Finals took place at Phoenix Leisure Centre. There were two groups with seven teams in each and matches were to be 14 minutes. The standard of netball was obviously very high, so the team were looking to perform well and enjoy the experience.
We were a little unprepared and nervous going into the first game against St Thomas Moore Sixth Form College and thus didn’t play particularly well, losing 3-13. Having settled the nerves, our approach was much more positive in the second game against St Joseph’s College and we were 2 up at half time. We were then able to build on this, dominating in the second half to win 12-5.
We went into game three with newfound confidence and beat Birmingham Metropolitan College 8-3. Our fourth game was against Hereford Sixth Form College, who were so far unbeaten. Both teams played a very high standard of netball and at half time there was only one goal in it. Unfortunately for Shrewsbury, the game finished 8-7 in favour of Hereford, though the girls put up an excellent fight. Though a little disappointed with their last result, the team pushed on to beat King Edward VI College 9-7 before losing our final game to top of the table Bromsgrove 7-3.
Shrewsbury finished fourth in their group with 3 wins and 3 loses - a great achievement and a solid foundation to build on next year, particularly considering the team was largely made up of Lower Sixth pupils. Well done!
