David Schofield (O 2013-18) the current vice chairman of the SSPA, who has had five boys at Shrewsbury, has very kindly donated a trophy – the Schofield Salver – to be played for at this event on an annual basis.
This fixture was scheduled to take place this weekend to coincide with the start of the Michaelmas Term – when parents would be dropping off their sons and daughters at the start of term.
16 players turned up to play in the event – a mixture of current parents, some parents whose children have now left, some OSGS Members – some of whom have and have had children at Shrewsbury.
The OSGS welcomes ex-pupils, their parents, as well as teachers or anyone else who has had some sort of connection to Shrewsbury to join our golfing society. We are particularly keen to welcome ladies to join us too. Please do get in touch with the honorary secretary (details below) if you are interested in joining the OSGS.
Following tea/coffee and bacon rolls we set out in 4 Balls playing an individual Stableford Competition on the Hawkstone Course. The weather was kind to us. Although it was cloudy at times there were also periods of warm autumn sunshine. The course was still suffering the effects of the summer drought and it was fiery in places with hard bounces on the fairways. Nonetheless, everybody had a great day.
Post the golf we enjoyed drinks, soup and sandwiches in the Terrace Restaurant. The following people all won prizes as follows:
- Nearest the Pin in 2 on 7th Hole - Chris Dickson (R 1972-77)
- Nearest the Pin on the 12th Hole - Robert Lanyon (Rt 1950-54)
- Longest Drive on the 18th Hole - Will Painter (R 1967-71)
- Third Prize with 34 Points - Anthony Smith (I 1954-59)
- Second Prize with 36 Points - Will Painter (R 1967-71)
- First Prize with 37 Points - Michael Roberts (Ch 1956-61) – First Winner of The Schofield Trophy
Hawkstone Park is currently undergoing some exciting refurbishment with a new owner of the hotel and golf courses in place and the beginning of the building of a new golf club house. The existing Terrace Restaurant is going to be turned into a spa and swimming pool complex later.
The OSGS has sponsored a new “corporate membership” for Shrewsbury School pupils to play golf at Hawkstone Park and with the assistance of Mark Schofield, Master in Charge of Golf, pupils will now have regular opportunities to play golf each term here.
Five new members were signed up to the OSGS as a result of this fixture and we look forward to welcoming them at future meetings and playing for The Schofield Salver again next year.
