As a member of Peter Gladstone’s winning crew of the Princess Elizabeth Cup in 1961, alongside John Godby (I 1956-61), OSGS member, and as a member of the Barber/Shaw family clan, Stephen Shaw (M 1956-61) has captained OSGS for 6 long years into third place in this Triangular versus Old Alleynians and Old Tonbrigians
This sorry record of years in the wilderness is contrary to all expectations.
On a glorious afternoon with hardly a cloud in the sky and a zephyr of wind, OSGS chalked up victory at last with 151 pts (OTs 149pts and OAs 147pts). Wow! Worthy of the setting as many regard Tandridge as one of Harry Colt’s finest designs and the catering is superb.
Our heroes were: Malcolm McMullan (I 1958-62) & Frank Higham (O 1968-72) 40 pts: Peter Renshaw (Ch 1959-64) & Peter Thwaites (R 1960-64) 39 pts: Bob Lister (SH 1966-70) & John Parker (SH 1952-57) 38 pts and David Umpleby (SH 1990-95) & Stephen Shaw (M 1956-61) 34 pts.
Attached is a photograph of John Parker (SH 1952-57), immaculate with OSGS tie, like a cat with a saucer of cream, never mind his joy and surprise at Shrewsbury’s sensational win.
