RSSH: friendly vs Adams' Grammar

Thursday 24 January 2013

With most sport at Shrewsbury struggling to continue in any meaningful form with all the snow, The Hunt, of course, are pretty much carrying on regardless. A little bit of snow and the cold aren't enough to stop this hardy bunch of intrepid athletes!  Indeed, in preparation for this week's friendly fixture against Adams' Grammar, a minibus-load of Hunt runners took to the hills at East Ridge near Pontesbury for a fairly unorthodox trudge through the snow, preceded by a mass 20-man attempt to push PJM's truculent Renault up the icy hill to the car park.

Hunt Training Run- East Ridge, Pontesbury

With 24 hours to recover, 16 Hunt runners travelled to Newport the following day to take on an Adams' team somewhat lacking in the depth of numbers that The Hunt enjoys.  Having dodged the volley of snowballs from the troglodyte rugby players emerging from the shadows, our runners surveyed the blanket of snow before them on what looked to be a pretty tough 5km. Nevertheless, the Hunt immediately established a strong pack of runners at the front of the race following the gun, with the expected trio of Huntsman Ed Mallett, Senior Whip Seb Blake and Lower Sixth Former Rory Fraser quickly putting together a lead from the chasing pack.

Ralph Wade took on the responsibility of heading up the chasing pack, and indeed he did well to hold 4th position for the rest of the race, despite being pushed hard by the Adams' captain and their first 'counter' who placed 5th.  A flurry of Hunt runners followed, with all Shrewsbury from position 6-11, including third former Will Hayward in 8th, and fourth formers Oscar Dickins and Ben Remnant (6th and 10th respectively).

Whilst the win was never in any doubt, it was nevertheless a useful run-out for our lads ahead of the County Champs at the start of February, and this will certainly have been a confidence boost.
