Rugby: 1st XV Nat West Vase campaign

Monday 19 November 2018

The 1st XV went into action last Wednesday in the fourth round of the NatWest Vase buoyed by a string of excellent performances in the competition to date.

A trip to Bishop Vesey’s Grammar was no easy task, however, with a place in the last 16 (Midlands A) at stake. But it was made even more difficult with an injury to Joe Scott and Xander Nuijten. Consequently the lack of effectiveness from restarts meant that we couldn’t secure the ball in the forwards to get the ball to our backs; the half-time score was 0-15 to the home team.

This group doesn’t give up however and when we did secure possession, our backs showed their quality with scores. Slowly we started to claw back the deficit – first to 7-15 (Tom Plaut) then to 14-18 (Harry Remnant) – to put pressure on Bishop Vesey’s. However, a number of decisions went against us, including an innocuous yellow card, which meant we came up just short. A Vesey’s try in the final minutes meant the fairytale was over, losing 14-26.

It was a shame for this group not to go further, but they have done themselves proud and played some fantastic rugby on the way.
