Shrewsbury School

Salopian cricket success

Friday 29 September 2017

Current and former pupils of Shrewsbury School have been hitting national cricket headlines in recent weeks.

Worcestershire CCC ended a memorable season this week as they followed up their promotion to Division One on Wednesday 27th September by clinching the Specsavers County Championship Division Two title 24 hours later.

Old Salopians Joe Leach (M 2004-09) and Ed Barnard (PH 2012-14) played important season-long roles to help Worcestershire CCC claim their first County Championship Division Two title for 14 years.

Joe Leach, who has replaced Mitchell as Captain of Worcestershire this summer, took his Championship wicket tally to 69 - the highest tally in Division Two – with an early double strike to set his side on their way to victory against Durham. It was their ninth win in 14 games.

Ed Barnard has also made sizeable contributions with the bat and ball, weighing in with 46 wickets and over 600 runs.

This cricket news adds to the recent successes of OS Edward Pollock (I 2011-13) smashing his way to success for Warwickshire in the T20 Blast Finals Day, Oliver Westbury (S 2013-15) gaining his first full-time contract at Worcestershire, and George Panayi (Ch 2011-15) making his first class debut for Warwickshire CCC this summer.

Further to this, in September the School U17 XI ended their season as Runners-Up in the National Final of the School Sports Magazine U17 Cup; and the U15 Girls' XI finished their outstanding season by reaching the Finals Day of the National T20.
