A Shock Defeat at Huntercombe! (For the Golfers)

Sunday 22 April 2018

Footballers vs Golfers......

OSGS members have long enjoyed golf with the Saracens on their North Devon Tours, at Royal West Devon, Westward Ho! and Saunton. Sadly abandoned in 2018 through lack of support.  “Aucto splendore resurgo!”

More recently, OSGS has welcomed Sabrina Club members to Huntercombe Golf Club on the eve of Henley Royal Regatta for a combined meeting for golf and a sumptuous supper at the Club.

Following an inspired suggestion at last year’s Sabrina supper at Huntercombe by Miles Preston (DB 1963-68), President of Sabrina, members of OSGS played a team of OS Footballers, assembled by Richard McGarry (Ch 2001-06), former Chairman of OS Football Club on Sunday 22nd April, at Huntercombe.

Understandably, in the true spirit of Sir Philip Sidney at the Battle of Zutphen, there were certain OSGS pairings who wanted to contrive a close victory for OSGS, perhaps.

Miscalculations abounded, partly unforeseen by the gracious decision of the non-playing OSGS Captain (Hon Sec) to offer Ben Chesters (Rt 1992-97) (6) on free transfer to OSFC. Ben has after all played in two winning Arthur Dunn Cup finals.

Then there was a monster putt from Oliver Heywood (S 2001-06) off the 18th green to clinch half a point from the fancied ‘banker’ pairing of David Umpleby (SH 1990-95) & Peter Worth (M 1965-70).

The result of this inaugural match was a shock defeat for OSGS. For the gory details, read on, OSFC players first:

Richard McGarry (18) & Harry Fildes (Rt 1998-03) (21) lost to Alexander Stewart (O 2006-09) & Nicky Renton (O 2004-09) 5x3

Oliver Heywood & Oliver Harrison (SH 2001-06) halved with David Umpleby (6) & Peter Worth (5)

Will Briggs (O 2005-10) (18) & Ben Chesters (6) beat Charles Hill (SH 1980-84) & Stephen Osborne (O 1984-89) 4x2

Will Foster (S 1998-03) (10) & Sam Robertson (M 1998-03) (18) beat James Butler (S 1960-65) (14) & Harry Boutflower (S 2008-13) (14) 4x2.

Match Result: OS Footballers beat OS Golfers 2½to 1½
