St George’s College hosted our qualifying round of the Public Schools Old Boys' L.T.A. D’Abernon Cup. The college has a fantastic facility with four indoor courts, and Shrewsbury was represented by former school doubles partners Will Mackenzie (O 1998-02) and Tom Gerrard (SH 1999-04) - pictured. The competition was as stiff as ever, with Lancing, Sherbourne, Wellington, St. Paul’s and the hosts St. George’s all in our group. The Mackenzie/Gerrard combination ultimately proved too much for their opponents to handle as they claimed all 5 scalps holding their nerve in clutch like fashion in three deciding tie breaks.
It was the key moments where some old school doubles combinations secured vital points and we now look forward to the quarter finals on June 17, where two pairs will represent. The final will be held at the All England Club, and there is all to play for, though no doubt tougher competition and renowned tennis schools such as Millfield, Repton and Reeds will need to be overcome first.
