Wallingford Regatta 2019

Thursday 9 May 2019

On Sunday 5th May four Shrewsbury crews travelled to Dorney Lake to compete at the Wallingford Regatta.

The first crew to race were the 1st VIII in the Challenge Eights event. They came second in their heat and progressed into the Final along with a very strong field that included two of the top three crews from the Schools’ Head.

1st VIII

In the Final the 1st VIII made a blistering start and led the field impressively over the first three-quarters of the race. In the closing stages they were overtaken and had to settle for 4th place but they have many positives to take from their experience.

2nd VIII

The 2nd VIII took on a tough challenge in the 1st VIIIs’ event. They held their own in a very competitive race, coming in 4th and only one second off 2nd but failed to qualify for the Final.

The Senior girls raced two quads in the Women’s Challenge Quads event. The 1st boat made a poor start in their heat but showed great composure to recover well and secure a place in the Final. The 2nd boat by contrast made a blistering start to lead the field over the first thousand metres but was overhauled in the closing stages to finish 4th and narrowly miss out on a place in the Final.

1st Quad

2nd Quad

In the Final the 1st boat produced their best row of the season so far to secure an impressive 3rd place against strong opposition.
