Young Engineers Group win Best Engineered Car Award (and a place in the Final)

Monday 17 September 2012

2nd October upate: Despite not quite achieving the requisite number of miles when racing at in the North West Heat at Aintree recently in our Greenpower car, and being unable to take part in the next qualifying round at Castle Combe last weekend due to our coach weekend, our team of Young Engineers have been offered a place in the National Finals of the Greenwood Formula 24 Competiton at Goodwood later in October. The Director of Greenpower, Jeremy Way wrote "Having won the award for Best Engineered car at Aintree, and having witnessed the inspiring enthusiasm of your team of young engineers, we have great pleasure in inviting you to attend the National Finals as one of three wild card entries."

The Young Engineers Group travelled to the Liverpool Motor Club circuit on September 13th to drive the car they had built in the school’s D & T department in the Greenpower Formula 24 Competition

After scrutineering and a short practice drive around the circuit they lined up on the grid to compete in the four hour endurance race. The 32 entrants brought together teams from across the north of the country including ten from last year’s National Final. The five boys worked together as drivers and pit crew and consistently lapped in the top ten cars during the first three hours. In the last hour their lack of experience started to show, but they battled on. When they slowly crept into the pits with batteries drained ten minutes from the end of the race they were in 12th place, two other cars managed to continue and complete another lap pushing them down to a final placing of 14th position.

At the presentations after the race it was announced that the judge from IMechE (The Institute of Mechanical Engineering) had awarded the team the trophy for the “Best Engineered Car” which has raised the team's spirits. They are now looking forward to the next race at the Castle Combe circuit at the end of the month.
