The Young Engineers Group travelled to the Liverpool Motor Club circuit on September 13th to drive the car they had built in the school’s D & T department in the Greenpower Formula 24 Competition
After scrutineering and a short practice drive around the circuit they lined up on the grid to compete in the four hour endurance race. The 32 entrants brought together teams from across the north of the country including ten from last year’s National Final. The five boys worked together as drivers and pit crew and consistently lapped in the top ten cars during the first three hours. In the last hour their lack of experience started to show, but they battled on. When they slowly crept into the pits with batteries drained ten minutes from the end of the race they were in 12th place, two other cars managed to continue and complete another lap pushing them down to a final placing of 14th position.
At the presentations after the race it was announced that the judge from IMechE (The Institute of Mechanical Engineering) had awarded the team the trophy for the “Best Engineered Car” which has raised the team's spirits. They are now looking forward to the next race at the Castle Combe circuit at the end of the month.
