We were delighted to hear on the last day of the Michaelmas Term that Carys Gittins (EDH 2011-2012) has been offered a place at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, starting in September 2013.
Carys, who is currently on a gap year, was described by John Moore, Director of Music as "an exemplary scholar, who continually played a major role in the musical life of the school during her sixth form years here." Carys was not only our principal flautist, but a terrific soloist too.
Carys will be going out to Shrewsbury School International in Bangkok in January where she will be working as a 'Gapper' until July. One project that she can look forward to there is working with Peter Fanning once again, who will be directing the Shrewsbury International production of 'The Bubble'. Peter originally co-wrote 'The Bubble' in 2002 as Shrewsbury School's musical that was performed in both Shrewsbury and at the Edinburgh Fringe. Its story of bonuses and greed surrounding the South Seas Bubble fiasco of the early eighteenth century suddenly seemed to have huge relevance to today's credit crunch crisis, and in 2009 'The Bubble' was revived and performed once again at the Edinburgh Fringe. It will be fascinating to see how the production will differ when it is performed in Bangkok next summer.
