The key parts of the Application Pack are the Registration Form (for candidates who have not yet registered as prospective students at Shrewsbury), Academic Application form and the Personal Statement. Also included are our Specialist Scholarship forms (further details below).
- Candidates must be Registered to take our assessments and there is a £100 fee for this.
- All candidates must complete the Academic Application form and the Personal Statement.
- Candidates only need to complete our Art, Drama, Music or Sports Scholarship forms if they wish to apply for a specialist scholarship. (Candidates may apply for more than one scholarship.)
Once we have received candidates' application forms, we will produce timetables for written papers, interviews and assessments. Candidates who are entitled to special provision in examinations (e.g. extra time, or use of laptop) will receive this for their entrance examinations, but will need to provide evidence in the form of an Educational Psychologist's report to accompany their application forms.
Assessments and Interviews
Candidates nominate four academic subjects for assessment. Ideally these should be the subjects that they intend to take for A Level. However, we recognise that some applicants will not yet have firm plans for their A Levels and we suggest that they offer four of their strongest GCSE subjects.
Exam papers will be set in accordance with GCSE syllabuses, albeit in the knowledge that candidates will not yet have finished their GCSE courses. Papers will be approximately one hour in length - please also see our Specimen Papers page for examples.
Candidates who do not have English as their first language take "English as an Additional Language" (EAL) as one of their four subjects.
Candidates will receive academic and pastoral interviews during the Assessment Weekend. We will also ask for permission to write to the applicant’s current Head Teacher for a reference.
We will provide accommodation for all potential boarders attending our main Assessment Weekend on Friday; this will enable them to enjoy a relaxing evening. For more details, please see our Assessment Weekend page.
We will be offering up to 8 academic scholarships and up to 6 other specialist scholarships that include Music, Sport, Art and Drama. Academic scholarships will be awarded as a result of exceptional performance in the entrance examination. The other specialist scholarships will be assessed during the Assessment Weekend, through practical assessment and interview.
In addition, we offer two sporting scholarships: The Margaret Cassidy Sports Scholarship is for an outstanding sportsman (worth up to 100% of fees, subject to means testing); and the Alex Wilson Dayboy Scholarship is awarded every two years to a local sportsman of exceptional talent (worth up to 100% of day fees, subject to means testing).
Offers of Places
We will aim to have made our decisions by early December, and will then offer successful candidates a place in our Sixth Form, conditional on them achieving at least three A and three B grades (three 7 and three 6) at GCSE.
You will be sent an offer letter including an Acceptance of a Conditional Place form which needs to be completed and returned with the relevant deposit. The deposit is 10% of a term’s fee. For families whose normal residence is outside the UK, there is an additional deposit which is 90% of the current fee for one term.
It is possible that places may remain unfilled following the entrance examinations in November. If so, then late applicants will follow a similar assessment procedure and places will be offered on a 'first come, first served' basis.
