Examination Results 2018

A Levels

Pupils at Shrewsbury school have once again achieved an outstanding set of A Level examination results.

56% of all papers were graded at A* or A and over 80% of all grades were at A* to B level, meaning that pupils are now poised to take up places at leading Higher Education institutions.

Eleven pupils managed a clean sweep of A* grades and a total of 60 managed an A* or an A in every subject.

Successes came right across the curriculum – with pupils demonstrating their ability to skilfully combine breadth with excellence across all disciplines.

Headmaster Mark Turner commented, “We are delighted that our pupils have been rewarded for their effort and industry and that they are now equipped not only with the grades that they need to access and thrive in the next step on their academic journey, but also with the enthusiasm for learning and open-mindedness that will prepare them for successful and fulfilled futures.

"It is especially pleasing to note that these pupils have often achieved these outstanding grades at the same time as participating in a broad, dynamic and challenging co-curricular programme and of course in the context of an incredibly busy full boarding school. We wish every one of them all the best as they enter the next phase of their education.”

GCSEs

Our Fifth Form pupils also celebrated an outstanding set of GCSE results this year.

In the context of rising difficulty in GCSE specifications and a national picture of grade deflation, their performance was particularly spectacular.

Two-thirds of all papers sat by the Year 11 Pupils were graded at A or A*. Thirty-four individual pupils achieved a clean sweep of A* or A grades and of these, ten produced an immaculate set of top performances.

One hundred pupils of the 130 who sat the English Literature paper achieved either an A or an A*, and 93 pupils achieved the same level in Mathematics on the new and more rigorous 9-1 specification. Successes came right across the academic spectrum, from Art – in which ten of the prestigious grade 9s were awarded – through to the sciences who collected a total of 266 A or A* grades across the three disciplines.

Headmaster Mark Turner commented: “The pupils should be very proud indeed of this excellent set of GCSE results, which reflect their diligent and industrious efforts alongside the enthusiasm and passion of the teaching staff. The high-level attainment on display is a strong endorsement of the ability of Shrewsbury School pupils to maintain a commitment to academic excellence in tandem with wholehearted participation in a broad and dynamic co-curricular programme. We wish them all the best as they celebrate this fine achievement.”
