Meet the Housemistress...
Jane Pattenden and her husband Paul have shared the running of Moser’s Hall since September 2010. Paul was Housemaster of Moser's as a boys' House until summer 2017, after which Jane took over as Housemistress in September 2017 when Moser’s re-opened as a girls’ House following a substantial renovation and refurbishment.
Moser’s Hall was completed in 1884 as one of the first purpose-built boarding Houses on the Shrewsbury School site, making Moser’s unique in being a traditional boarding house with over 100 years of history, but with a modern interior designed specifically for girls.
Jane was educated at Withington Girls’ School and then St Hilda’s College, Oxford University, where she stayed on to complete a doctorate in Atmospheric Physics – using computer simulations to analyse the effect of volcanic aerosol on the ozone layer. She then moved to a job as a quantitative analyst for Citibank in London before taking a career break to start a family.
Following the arrival of her two sons (Adam 2001 and Joe 2003) and the family’s relocation to Shrewsbury, Jane re-trained as a teacher and taught at Belvidere School before joining the Physics Faculty of Shrewsbury School in 2008.
In addition to teaching and pastoral duties within Moser’s, Jane is part of the School’s Safeguarding and Child Protection team. Jane is a governor at the Shrewsbury Cathedral Catholic Primary School.
Whenever time allows, Jane escapes out onto the Shropshire Hills with the family dogs – Scamp and Murphy. Her other passion is yoga – a suitable antidote for living in a busy boarding school!
Paul Pattenden read Physics at Oxford University (St John's College), where he stayed to complete a doctorate (using the second-most-famous particle accelerator in Switzerland!). As a keen college oarsman, he was also Senior Umpire of the Oxford University bumping races – similar to the ‘Bumpers’ regatta at Shrewsbury.
Beyond the classroom, Paul has enjoyed running a number of sports teams, including rugby, hockey, rowing and golf. Paul is a keen golfer himself, but also enjoys the chance to sneak down to the river for apaddle in his vintage sculling boat when no one’s watching.
