Meet the Housemaster...
Will Hughes and his family at Ridgemount

Will Hughes took over as Ridgemount's Housemaster in September 2009.

Will was born and bred in Birmingham and attended King Edward's VI Five Ways Grammar school until joining the Sixth Form here at Shrewsbury. He joined The Grove in its first year and went on to be Head of House and played 1st XI football and cricket and 1st XV rugby.  A Gap year in Australia, Fiji and New Zealand was followed by a sports science degree at Northumbria University and then onto a masters diploma in coaching from Heriot Watt, Edinburgh.  Will then taught PE and Games at the Blue Coat Preparatory School in Birmingham where he met wife Sam and they moved together to the South West for Will to become Master i/c cricket at Exeter School and Sam to work at Millfield Preparatory School.

The lure of Head of PE at Shrewsbury was too strong and Will returned in 2004 and was then appointed Director of Sport the following year, a new post at Shrewsbury. Will oversaw several developments in the school sports programme including the introduction of curriculum games and the building of the Gemini swimming pool  and the Neville Cardus cricket centre, which has subsequently been renamed the GMR Cricket Centre in honour of a major charitable contribution received by Shrewsbury School from the Grandhi family. He has been on several major overseas tours, is a level 3 cricket coach and has a real interest in sports psychology.

Will is a keen golfer, he's a playing member of the MCC, and he also enjoys snow boarding, gardening and attempting to grow his own vegetables. Will and Sam like to explore Wales, Cornwall and Spain when there is chance to escape!

Will and Sam have two children, Alice (2003) and George (2005), as well as their aging dog, Odie.

Meet the Housemaster-elect for September 2022

Edward is currently in his sixth year as a boarding boys' housemaster at Glenalmond College in Perth. He was previously Assistant Head of English and Head of Cricket at Pangbourne (2013-2016) and before taught English at Guildford High School for Girls (2011-2013). The son of a teacher and a keen sportsman, Edward was educated at St John's School Leatherhead, where he was Head of Choir. He studied English Literature at the University of Edinburgh.

Edward is married to Sarah, who is Head of Mathematics at a prep school, and they have two young boys aged three and one.
