Shrewsbury School

Tennis

Tennis is played throughout the year at Shrewsbury although the main term is the Summer Term. During the Michaelmas and Lent Terms Mr Harding and Mr Clark take 15 pupils on average each week on a Sunday 7-9pm at the indoor courts of The Shrewsbury Club.  In three of the last five years, Mr Harding and Mr Clark have taken tennis training weeks for team players to Majorca in the Easter holidays.

In the Summer Term the pupils are split into groups of similar standard and ambition.  There is a Top Squad for boys of all ages who have shown the ability and ambition to be a 1st VI or 2nd VI player.  After this there is a Fifth and Sixth Form squad for non-team players.  The Third and Fourth Form are in two separate squads divided by ability (the boys and girls train together).  All squads receive coaching appropriate to the level of their play.

The School runs 1st VI, 2nd VI, 3rd VI, U15A, U15B, U14A, U14B teams in the Summer Term for boys and 1st VI, U15A and U15B teams for girls.   Matches are played against Radley College, Rugby, Uppingham, Oundle, Malvern, MCS, KES Birmingham, Cheltenham College, Repton, Warwick and Ellesmere, as well as internal fixtures and OS fixtures.  There are Senior and Junior House competitions for tennis.  During the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, Mr Harding and Mr Clark take an average of a dozen boys and girls for tennis on a Sunday night at the nearby Shrewsbury Club in Harlescott, which has six indoor courts.

The senior girls have their own separate squad, although an outstanding player would be drafted into Top Squad in order to give her the right training environment; in recent years two girls have represented Shrewsbury School's 1st team.   So far the girls have only competed at a local level and play against Ellesmere, Shrewsbury High School, Moreton Hall and Adcote.  There have also been regular competitive inter-House matches between Mary Sidney Hall, Emma Darwin Hall and The Grove.
