Shrewsbury School crest

Futures at Shrewsbury provides bespoke support to all pupils offering more than just careers advice enabling individuals to flourish in life.

Futures is embedded in the day-to-day life of the school through tutorials, PSD and key events, providing experiences to ensure that Salopians are competent in a variety of professions and thrive in whatever career path they choose.

Nationally-recognised Department

This whole person approach, combined with a comprehensive strategy linked to the well-known Gatsby Career Benchmarks, has been acknowledged recently with the School being awarded Career Mark accreditation, one of the few independent schools to achieve that status.

Shrewsbury was also recently shortlisted for 2022 Independent School of the Year in the Careers Guidance Category, and while celebrating success is important, it must always reinforce the importance of providing the best possible service for our pupils, something that the Futures Team cannot do without the wonderful support that so many Old Salopians, parents and friends of Shrewsbury School contribute in so many areas of school life.

Futures connects pupils to our global, 1,400 members-strong alumni mentoring network providing real world labour market information and experiences through tailored mentoring which, along with personalised careers guidance, enabled 98% of Salopians to progress to university, with 92% securing their 1st choice university in 2021 and 79% of students selecting top tier and specialist universities across the world.

Ready for a World of Futures

Our pupils are connected to industry professionals beyond our alumni network, with over 100 entrepreneurs providing careers insights and delivering real-world mock assessments to prepare Salopians for entering employment, progression to university or degree apprenticeships, as well as offering advice on meaningful gap years that enhance career opportunities. 116 Fifth Form pupils undertook work placements in Summer 2022, thanks to this network.

Futures has enabled over 200 pupils, since 2020, to be distinctive leaders in higher education and industry by delivering the ILM Young Leaders Award – Shrewsbury is one of two independent schools to be accredited to deliver this qualification.

Global connections to higher education support our pupils’ borderless mindsets. In 2022, 6 students have been awarded sports scholarships to USA universities. Futures offer bespoke guidance, support with applications and coaching, enabling Salopians to successfully compete for these rare opportunities. Recent student Finn Sansom gained the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to the University of North Carolina, one of only three people in the UK to achieve this!

With a modern, distinctive approach to careers provision, Shrewsbury School’s Futures department will continue to connect Salopians to a global community of alumni, entrepreneurs and industries, empowering choice and providing unique opportunities and skills for successful careers for life.
