Shrewsbury seeks to appoint a well-qualified Teacher of Art with effect from September 2024, to teach at all levels in a strong and supportive faculty. The post could either suit an established teacher keen to further their experience, or someone at the start of their teaching career. The ability to teach Art is essential and the ability to teach Photography could be an advantage.

Cleaning Assistants

Cleaning Assistants

Hourly rate of pay is £10.42 per hour, increasing to £10.52 per hour following a successful six-month probationary review.

We are looking to recruit a number of Cleaning Assistants who are passionate about delivering an excellent cleaning service.  Working in our Establishment and Boarding House buildings, you will ensure that all areas are kept in a hygienic condition, ensuring a very high standard at all times.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a friendly and supportive environment, have an eye for detail with excellent standards of cleaning.  Previous cleaning or work experience in a similar role would be an advantage, however full training will be given.

Position 1:  16 hours per week working 9am – 5.00pm, Saturday and Sunday, 32 weeks term-time working (+ 5 weeks paid holiday)

Position 2:  20 hours per week working 9am – 1pm, Monday to Friday (rotational Saturdays), 35 weeks + 1 day, term-time working  (+ 5 weeks paid holiday)

HR & Employee Relations Officer

HR & Employee Relations Officer

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled Employee Relations Officer with a strong ER background to join our HR Department.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success in managing employee relations, including but not limited to, conducting investigations, hearings, appeals, grievance, disciplinary, performance, providing guidance to management, and developing and implementing policies and procedures.

This is a diverse and rewarding role that requires a highly organised, trustworthy individual with a can-do attitude and a calm disposition. The successful applicant will be a pro-active solution-finder and accomplished communicator, with strong professional values and skills in handling confidential information with discretion and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and lead a range of complex employee relations cases.
  • Provide guidance and support to management on employee relations issues including complex ER cases and change management.
  • Managing all ER cases from end-end, disciplinaries, grievances, long and short-term sickness absence cases
  • Updating HR policies and procedures.
  • Meeting facilitation including composing agendas and occasional minute-taking.

Essential Qualities and experience:

  • Post graduate qualification in Human Resources.
  • Overseeing complex and employee relation case management.
  • Demonstrable experience in an HR Business partner or Employee relations Advisor/Officer role within a multi-disciplinary and multi-site organisation.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Highly adaptable and flexible, with initiative and the ability to thrive under pressure.

General Maintenance Operative

General Maintenance Operative

Permanent, full-time, 52 weeks

We wish to appoint a General Maintenance Operative to join an established team in providing first line and general site support services to the Works Department Trades and the School as a whole.

We are looking for a flexible individual who has the required basic skills and the right personality to get the job done.  Essentially, you must have previous experience of supporting building trades, DIY skills, together with the ability to complete arduous tasks.  You must hold a full driving licence, with D1 entitlement, with experience of basic vehicle maintenance as you will be required to undertake first line assistance with the School Vehicle Fleet.  Other duties will include preventative maintenance works, Portable Appliance Testing (training will be provided, if required), recycling, collecting and delivering materials, furniture and other general portering tasks.

This is a full-time position working Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings on a rotational basis.  Please see the recruitment pack for further details on the rota.

Key Responsibilities:

  • All-round Personal Assistance for the Director of Development.
  • Dynamic diary and calendar management.
  • Call handling and welcoming visitors, parents, and staff.
  • Meeting facilitation including composing agendas and regular minute-taking.
  • Performing a range highly confidential administrative duties relating to the daily running of the Development Office.
  • Composition, editing, review and handling of a wide range of correspondence.

Essential Qualities:

  • Educated to A Level or above.

Trainee Theatre Technician

Trainee Theatre Technician

Full-time, year round position

An exciting and rewarding opportunity exists for an enthusiastic Trainee Technician to join our Performing Arts and Events Department.

The successful candidate will support the Senior Technician in all technical areas in Shrewsbury School’s Barnes Theatre and other school venues. You will work closely and assist the Senior Technician in the provision of technical support and equipment, and the day- to-day operation of the School Theatre.  You will assist the Senior Technician in providing technical support across the School for assemblies, lectures, concerts, house events and chapel service.   

You will be enthusiastic and keen to develop your skills in Technical Theatre, Stage Management, Theatre Design, Drama or related field. 

You will be willing to learn on the job gaining hands on experience under mentorship of Senior Technician and Technician.

You will be able to work as part of a team to achieve high standards for each event and production, with the ability to be pro-active, multi-task and work independently. You must be able to offer flexible working hours, as there will be a requirement to work evenings and/or weekends.

Essentially you will look to gain experience of:

  • Working in a multi-tasking environment including building maintenance
  • Setting up and operating sound, AV and lighting systems
  • Assist in design and running shows to a high standard for the school and commercial lets
  • Working safely and confidently at heights
  • Develop practical skills in technical and construction

Our pupils are talented, so applications from candidates with a high level of playing or coaching experience will be welcomed.

Relief Matron (Various Boarding Houses)

Relief Matron (Various Boarding Houses)

Required for April 2024

27 hours per week, term-time only

We have an exciting opportunity at Shrewsbury School to work within our Boarding Houses as Relief Matron, providing cover on the Matron’s non-working day.

The successful applicant will have excellent communication and pastoral skills in this Relief Matron role based in three of our Boarding Houses.  This position will provide relief cover for the permanent Matrons during the week in term-time.

The chosen applicant will also have a high level of organisational skills and a proven ability to form professional relationships with teenagers. The Relief Matron will work closely with the Housemaster or Housemistress, permanent Matron and pupils. This role also involves the need to have an understanding and sympathetic approach, balancing a friendly disposition with the need to maintain discipline. 

This position is required during term time only, working the following shifts:

  • Monday, Thursday and Friday morning (07:15 hours to 09:30 hours)
  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon (12.30 hours to 17:45 hours)  
  • Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evening (21:00 hours to 22:30 hours)

A full induction programme is provided along with training and development opportunities.

The role itself will involve food service, dining room set up and cleaning in between services. Flexibility is important as you will need to work some evenings and weekends however, we understand the need to have a work life balance and therefore provide rotas generally up to a month in advance. Days off are then flexible and can be booked and organised around personal life events with other team member or rostered days worked. Team members work 5 days out of 7 with 7.5 hour shifts that vary between the hours of 7am and 9pm. There are no split shifts required.
