Shrewsbury School

Safeguarding

In line with current legislation and also our desire to provide cutting-edge pastoral care, Shrewsbury School has a small team of staff who oversee ‘Safeguarding’ in the School.

The Second Master Mike Tonks has been appointed as the Senior Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). Mike is an experienced pastoral practitioner, having worked at Shrewsbury for 20 years. He is also a long-serving ISI Inspector and regularly attends external forums run by the BSA, LSCB and the NSPCC. He is supported in this role by three members of staff who act as Deputy DSLs. They are Anna Peak, Andrew Murfin and Henry Farmer.

It is the role of the Safeguarding Team to ensure best practice in all aspects of child protection and pupil welfare across the School. This involves providing a comprehensive staff INSET programme for all teachers, as well as more specialist support for Housemasters and Housemistresses. All new staff receive a thorough induction programme which places a clear emphasis on safeguarding issues. The School’s Tutor Programme, as well as the delivery of Pupil Social Development (PSD) within the curriculum, are designed to ensure current safeguarding issues are regularly discussed by pupils.

On the rare occasions that a significant safeguarding or child protection concern is raised within the School, it is the role of the Safeguarding Team to undertake appropriate investigations. This will be in line with our published Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and will involve liaison with external agencies as and when required.
