Sporting Excellence

Shrewsbury has a prestigious sporting history; Salopians established cross-country running in the form of 'The Royal Shrewsbury School Hunt' (RSSH) - receiving a World Athletics Heritage Plaque recognising this impressive feat as well as being central in the writing of the laws of football (the oldest set of written rules resides in our Library).

Jump forward to today where our Girls' 1st XI Cricket Team were 2021 National Champions, our 1st XI Boys' Football Team were 2023/24 National ISFA 6s champions, runners-up in the 2022/23 ESFA Cup and undefeated in the 2021/22 Hudl League, and our Girls' 1st VIII Rowing Team were record-breakers at Henley Royal Regatta in the Summer of 2021.

A number of our pupils have benefitted from the fantastic opportunities offered at Shrewsbury and have transitioned into the world of professional sport and international success. This has included 13 professional cricketers in the last 11 years, numerous representatives at world rowing championships and Salopians competing in elite-level athletics competitions.

Opportunities to participate

Whilst the pinnacle of school sport might be the 1st team aiming for success at national level, there is a wide base underpinning that achievement, ranging from recreational sessions to House sports and development squads.

Regardless of the level of involvement, our programme enables pupils to access some of the best facilities and playing fields in the country, alongside outstanding coaching.

Sport is such a unifying thing and the school really picks up on that and is something they really value; using sports to interact with lots of different people from different backgrounds, not just other schools in the area. - Chloe (MSH, 2023)

EPPP Schemes and Dedicated Athlete Programme

To support our pupils and dedicated athletes, we work with professional counties/clubs to deliver EPPP schemes and we have our own Dedicated Athlete Programme. We have moved with the times to deliver an exciting programme that augments the quality facilities and coaching with additional mentoring, lecture series and sports science that include athletic development (Strength & Conditioning), performance analysis and Growth Mindset workshops.

Sporting Experience Taster Days

Our sports facilities are put to good use by other clubs and organisations when they are not needed for our own use.

We also offer Sporting Experience Taster Days to groups of pupils in Years 5 & 6 at our feeder schools. For further details, please contact Alita Stephenson, Sports Administrator: [email protected], tel. 01743 280697.
