Food and Nutrition

Shrewsbury School crest

Meals at Shrewsbury are enjoyed in our purpose-built catering hall, Kingsland Hall ('KH'), where pupils choose from a wide variety of freshly prepared dishes and then eat with their friends and tutors from their House.

Our meals are cooked from scratch, using fresh ingredients and local suppliers wherever possible.  We happily cater for pupils with special dietary needs such as dairy/lactose intolerance, vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free diets and halal food.

We have a rolling menu for breakfast, lunch and supper that changes each term. Subject to occasional variation and the addition of special foodie events centred around theme days, food trends or key nutrition and sustainability messaging, the general format remains the same.

This term's menus* can be viewed here:

Our contract catering company is Holroyd Howe, an award-winning catering company that specialises in the education sector.  Committed to the provision of delicious meals that bring both ingredients and cultures to life, our onsite team are supported by nutritionists and sustainability specialists who create and deliver educational activities that help those we serve to make informed choices throughout the school day and ultimately, form a positive relationship with food that will last them their lifetime.

Both a continental and full-cooked breakfast, plus whole & cut fruits are on offer on all teaching days.  We also offer a continental breakfast on Sundays.

On all teaching days, lunch options include two hot meat choices, a vegetarian choice, soup and bread, a salad bar, a fresh fruit and yoghurt bar, and a hot pudding. In addition, two theatre-style deli bars offer different options – oriental noodles, paninis etc. – on different days of the week.

On Sundays, the ever-popular brunch is available between 10.45am and 1pm.

The format for supper is similar to that of lunch, and on Sundays, we offer a traditional roast meal.

Food Allergies Information

Shrewsbury School is committed to pupil safety. We have therefore published a Food Allergy Policy in conjunction with our caterers, Holroyd Howe Independent, to provide awareness and reassurance to parents, pupils and staff regarding our procedures and management of allergy-related events.

Our aims are:

  • To reduce the likelihood of a pupil or member of staff with a known food allergy displaying a severe reaction to a specific food while in school
  • To foster an understanding of and sense of responsibility for the specific needs of the individual members of the School community
  • To create an awareness of the action to take should someone with a severe food allergy display its symptoms
  • To ensure the School complies with the statutory guidance for supporting pupils with medical conditions.

Our Food Allergy Policy can be found here and our First Aid Policy can be downloaded by visiting our Policies page.

Dietary Needs

Our Head Chef welcomes the opportunity to talk both to parents and pupils about any special dietary needs or concerns that they may have. He can be contacted on 01743 280841.
