Speaker: Oliver Logan

Olly works as a performance consultant for British Swimming, with expertise spanning Biomechanics, Performance Analysis and Innovation in all aquatic disciplines. Before this he spent 12 years at the English Institute of Sport where he worked with Archery GB, British Athletics, British Wheelchair Basketball and English Table Tennis.

Since the early 1990s, Olympic and Paralympic sports have gradually increased their use of expertise in STEM subjects to help push performance levels. In his talk, Olly will provide examples of how sports performance staff use STEM first principles to solve some of the most challenging performance problems, including:

  • How knowledge and understanding of aerodynamics and hydronamics is used to create faster bikes, swimming suits and boats to improve performance.
  • How computer science is now used to analyse larger data sets than ever before to give sports a greater insight into key performance indicators.
  • How maths and projectile motion is used to model and optimise athlete performance.
