Partnership Community Engagement (PCE)

Three Salopians were invited to attend the High Sheriff’s Outstanding Young Citizen awards ceremony last week, joining 50 or so other impressive young people from the county.

The awards recognise the contributions of those between ages 10 and 18 for their work in the community.  Phoebe C (EDH, UVI) was nominated for her fundraising for Solidary Sports, running a charity auction that raised over £5,000.  Ollie S (PH, UVI) was nominated for his work organising the refugee homework club, as well as for his willingness to help with countless other events, from tea parties to making hampers for the Foodbank.

Of particular note, however, was Joss G (S, UVI), who received an exceptional commendation for his community service and volunteering work in various areas over the past three years. Whether leading the school’s work with the Foodbank, volunteering week in week out at the refugee homework club or at the activity days for local schools, his name appeared on every possible roster when a call when out for volunteers.

The citation read to the assembled group started with how Joss “embodies service leadership, borne out of an innate determination to put others before himself. Whether in his boarding house or as a school prefect, everything he does comes out of a sense of duty and care of others.”

Head of Volunteering Naomi Pritchard said: “All of our volunteering students have made such good contributions this year, however, Joss, Phoebe and Ollie have definitely gone above and beyond with their continued combined efforts.

“I was delighted to see their hard work being recognised and rewarded at the High Sheriff’s ceremony.  In addition to this, these three students are strong role models for the rest of our community and are paving the way for our volunteering students; we look forward to seeing even more meaningful contributions from this group. Well done Joss, Phoebe and Ollie.”

Phoebe, Ollie and Joss received recognition for their efforts from Selina Graham, High Sheriff, and Anna Turner, Lord Lieutenant, who both took time to speak to the pupils and offer their congratulation.  All three demonstrate the impact that the school’s volunteering and partnership programme has in the local community, and the difference that Salopians are willing to make.
