Partnership Community Engagement (PCE)

After another successful year of the Refugee Homework Club, Sixth Form pupil Kouki H (I) has reflected on his time volunteering at the club.

"Being involved in the Refugee Homework Club every week this year has been something I’ve genuinely loved, it has become a highlight of my routine and something I look forward to.

"The best part for me has definitely been the football on the astro. As soon as we get outside, the whole mood changes, everybody comes to life. It doesn’t matter where someone’s from or how quiet they are, once the game starts, we’re all just players on the same pitch. It’s amazing how football breaks down barriers and creates a playing field where everyone feels included straight away.

"We’ve had some great matches, lots of laughter and a real sense of team spirit. Even those who start off hanging back usually end up joining in, and you can literally see people grow in confidence week by week just from being part of it.

"But it’s not just about the game. During the winter months when it’s too dark for the astro we go back inside and I spend time helping with the children’s Maths and English homework. I’ve really enjoyed being able to sit down with the children and work through problems together, explaining things clearly and giving them space to figure things out for themselves. It’s really rewarding seeing someone understand something they were struggling with and knowing you helped them get there.

"Over the year, I’ve built some proper relationships with the kids, knowing all of them on a first name basis and that’s what makes Homework Club so special, it’s a space full of energy, support and community, which I’m really looking forward to next year!"
