More than 200 Old Salopians and former members of staff attended a party in Quod to celebrate the 90th birthday of legendary teacher Dr David Gee.

Doc Gee (as he is affectionately known) taught at Shrewsbury for 54 years between 1958 and 2012 during which time he was Housemaster of both Dayboys Hall and Severn Hill, Chaplain, Head of Divinity and Head of History. He remains active in School life as custodian of the School’s history, regularly giving talks and contributing to the Salopian Magazine as he approaches 70 years of association with Shrewsbury.

Former pupils had travelled from as far as Dubai and Chicago to be with Doc Gee at his party. In his speech former Headmaster Jeremy Goulding paid tribute to David and the academic ability and ambition which took him from Dewsbury in Yorkshire to a scholarship at Winchester College and Oxford University, before Doc Gee entertained the audience with some of his trademark hilarious anecdotes from his time on the staff.

With typically self-deprecating humour David repeated a joke he particularly liked from the School’s satirical magazine, “Doc Gee didn’t actually teach Charles Darwin…..but he did know his father!”

Having spoken to everyone who had attended and remembered most of their names, David was the last to leave the party shortly before the Sixth Form arrived for Quod night.
