Old Salopians

The Salopian Club office has been inundated with tributes to and memories of two former masters who died this term.

Martin Knox taught English and languages both ancient and modern at Shrewsbury between 1971 and 2003, after which he continued to support the School in a part-time role in Ridgemount and managed house sport over many years.  He ran 2nd XI cricket throughout his 32 years on the staff and was an immensely knowledgeable and loyal supporter of School sport and music.

Martin died aged 80 after a long illness.

Michael Hart was Head of History between 1956 and 1961 and he ran School House from 1961 until he left to take up the Headship of Mill Hill School in North London in 1967.

Although he was only at Shrewsbury for 11 years he made a lasting impression on his students, many of whom kept in touch with him until his death at the age of 95 on October 30th.

We received so many emails about both members of staff that it was impossible to reply to them all personally. There were many memorable stories from Michael Hart's history trip to Russia in 1967, when the pupils were in Red Square for the May Day parade, to Martin Knox's love and encyclopaedic knowledge of sport and music, his cars and his dislike of cheese and onion flavoured crisps!

Thank you to everyone who wrote in, all the messages were forwarded to the Knox and Hart families.
