Drama forms an important part of the extra-curricular programme at Shrewsbury. From the outset, pupils are encouraged to take part in a variety of exciting and stimulating theatre projects, including events devised and directed by the students themselves. As well as a thriving programme of House plays, each year sees four major productions at school level: the Senior School Play and the Junior School Play in the second half of the Michaelmas Term; a Whole School Musical in the Lent Term; and a Whole School Play in the final week of the Summer Term for all year groups not involved in public exams.
Additionally we aim to host at least one professional visiting company or artist in our studio theatre during the Michaelmas and Summer terms. Theatre visits are frequent and popular.
Shrewsbury prides itself on the high standard of its productions, and pupils are given the opportunity to perform in professional venues at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Royal Opera House and the Royal College of Music. In recent years, the School has produced a number of original musicals, which have toured to Edinburgh and London, attracting rave reviews and a coveted Fringe First award.
We were delighted to be named as one of the top schools in the 2018 Independent School of the Year awards, receiving recognition for continued excellence in the realm of the Performing Arts: School of the Year for the Performing Arts 'Highly Commended' Award.
