Shrewsbury School crest

Shrewsbury sets out to be one of the best cricket schools in the country. Our cricketers have the privilege of playing on the fields described by the cricket-writer Sir Neville Cardus as "the most beautiful playing fields in the world".

Shrewsbury regularly fields 14 teams across all age groups and has a flourishing House programme to enable boys and girls of all abilities to play. Our extensive touring programme enhances the pupil's cricketing education, and in 2025 our senior girls and boys visited Cape Town, while our U15A and U15B boys travelled to the UAE.

The school has four immaculate cricket squares, 18 grass nets and four artificial nets allowing our cricketers to make use of some of the best facilities in the country, with our indoor cricket centre hosting upwards of 80 sessions each week during the winter. Our Cricket Professional and Head of Girls Cricket lead the coaching programme, assisted by a team of coaches including wicket-keeping and spin bowling specialists, further supplemented by additional masterclasses from coaches working in the professional game.

- Shock absorbers in the bowler's landing area

- Four BOLA bowling machines

- A Merlyn spin bowling machine

- State-of -the-art-LED lighting

- Viewing gallery overlooking all four lanes.

Team Achievements

In 2023, our U17 Boys' cricket team won The Cricket Paper's U17 National Cup, retaining the title they won in 2022. They reached the semi-final stage of the T20 Cup in 2024 and the aforementioned U17 Cup in 2025. This meant that the senior boys had reached the final-four stage in one of these competitions in each of the last four years - a feat unmatched by any other school in the country.

The culmination of the Boys' 1st XI season is the Silk Trophy. This highly-coveted trophy is competed for by Shrewsbury, Eton, Stowe and an overseas touring side at the end of each summer term. In 2025 Shrewsbury won the Silk Trophy following a clean sweep of victories against the English sides and the famous Grey College from South Africa.

The Boys' U15 side finished as runners up in the 2025 ESCA U15 T20 Cup at Arundel, repeating their appearance in the prestigious Finals Day in 2024.

The Girls’ 1st XI team were crowned champions of The Cricket Paper’s National Schools 100 Ball competition 2021 and were runners up in the same competition the following year.

We regularly field three girls' teams from the following squads: Girl's 1st XI, Girl's 2nd XI, Girls U17's, Girls U15's and Girls U14's.

We work alongside local counties including Warwickshire CCC to further develop our players. A number of our players are included in county, EPP and academy pathways.

Our winter programme includes weekly 1:1's and 1:2s, weekly 1st XI training sessions, and three open sessions for the girls to come in and practice any skills they'd like to. Alongside regular games in the summer, players will also get regular training in group sessions and 1:1's if required.

Individual Success

Since 2008, 13 Salopians have signed professional contracts, with James Taylor and Issy Wong also going on to represent England at the highest level. In 2024, three pupils represented their country at U19 International level, with Jack Home (OS 2023) and Theo Wylie (OS 2023) playing for England, while Freddie O (Ch, UVI) appeared for Ireland aged just 16. In the summer of 2024, Jack and Theo both put pen to paper on professional contracts, signing for Worcestershire and Warwickshire respectively. Other notable members of the OS community to have starred in the First Class game include Ed Barnard (PH 2012-14) (Warwickshire), Joe Leach (M 2004-09) (Worcestershire) and David Lloyd (G 08-10) (Derbyshire).
