Shrewsbury: for life

Shrewsbury School crest

“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”
Charles Darwin
Old Salopian

Shrewsbury offers all-round education that nurtures the whole person in an exceptionally welcoming, caring and inspiring environment, integrating tradition with innovation.

At Shrewsbury our pupils regularly achieve excellent academic results whilst engaging in a range of exciting co-curricular opportunities. Combined with the individually focused support from our dedicated Futures Department, we empower Salopians to flourish for life.

The Salopian community provides a place where all belong and feel free to grow as individuals – our pupils are connected to each other and to our global network of Old Salopians, sharing passions and friendships that will last a lifetime.

In addition to these qualities, we believe that three things make Shrewsbury School unique in the landscape of great British boarding and day schools: our culture, our educational philosophy, and our home.

Our culture

Shrewsbury is the historic co-educational British boarding and day school with a twinkle in its eye. Shrewsbury offers a unique blend of tradition and originality; serious purpose and playfulness; endeavour and ease-of-being; shared community values and celebration of the individual. We aim to set a distinctive tone that is purposeful yet calm; challenging yet kind; ambitious yet gentle. Together, we work to encourage each pupil to be confident, kind and ready to thrive in life.

Our educational philosophy

Our Six Salopian Virtues are embedded and promoted through our distinctive model of whole person education.

We offer a unique whole person education - Floreat - that fosters learning and personal development in four vital and mutually reinforcing fields: the intellective; the active; the expressive and the reflective.

As a learning community, we pursue academic knowledge, wisdom and truth; we aim to develop the ‘cultural capital’ of each child and instil character strengths, aptitudes and vital life skills, such as resilience and resourcefulness. We promote individual flourishing in equal measure with the pursuit of communal values, social responsibility and a willingness to contribute positively to the world around us.

Our home

Our pupils and staff live and work together in a uniquely beautiful and inspirational setting. Set on the banks of the River Severn, our excellently resourced 110-acre site has a campus that encompasses the beating heart of our boarding and day community.

The site, focused around our Top and Lower Commons, provides a distinctive metropolitan lifestyle with a stunning rural backdrop. We believe that anywhere can be a classroom, and we take full advantage of our surroundings to enrich our pupils' educational journey.

Located within walking distance to the centre of the county town of Shrewsbury and with easy access to the UK’s second and third biggest cities, Birmingham and Manchester, this exceptional setting provides a place of calm within which pupils can grow and learn in confidence.
