Third Form (Year 9) Scholarships

For more detailed information on each of our Scholarships, please see the Guidance Notes on our Application Forms page.

Academic Scholarships

  • 4 Butler Scholarships (up to 30% of fees)
  • 6 Kennedy and Moss Scholarships (up to 20% of fees)
  • 7 Alington Scholarships (at least £2,000 per year).

The value of scholarships can be enhanced subject to means-testing.

Candidates for these awards sit the Scholarship Examination in May of their year of entry. They spend two and a half days at the School, and awards are made on the basis of written papers and interview.

Application for Academic Scholarships should be made via prep schools or, if your child is not at a prep school, in discussion with the Director of Admissions.

Music Scholarships
Up to 10 Music Scholarships are awarded each year.  The majority of Music Scholarships carry fee remission of 10%, although awards of up to 30% remission can be made.  In addition, Music Scholars receive free music tuition on two instruments. Candidates are required to perform on two instruments, or one instrument and voice.  Candidates should normally prepare two contrasting pieces.  There will be sight-reading and aural tests, and an interview.  Music Scholars are expected to play a full part in the musical life of the School during their time at Shrewsbury.

Within the Music Scholarship, we also offer specialist Choral and String Scholarship awards.  (Choral Scholars receive free singing tuition only.)

Art Scholarships
A small number of Art Scholarships are awarded each year.  Most scholarships carry fee remission of 10%, although larger awards are sometimes made.  Awards are made on the basis of a personal portfolio, a practical examination in drawing from an object or group or objects, and an interview.

Design and Technology Scholarships
A small number of Design and Technology Scholarships are awarded each year.  Most scholarships carry fee remission of 10%, although larger awards are sometimes made.  Awards are made on the basis of a portfolio of work, an examination designed to test a candidate's ability to design under exam conditions, and an interview.

Drama Scholarships
A small number of Drama Scholarships are awarded each year.  Most scholarships carry fee remission of 10%, although larger awards are sometimes made.  Awards will be made based on the presentation of two short, contrasting monologues, an interview and participation in a group workshop audition. Candidates will be asked to provide information on their previous drama experience and the School will also seek a reference from the candidate's current school drama teacher. Drama Scholars will be expected to play a full part in the dramatic life of the School during their time at Shrewsbury.

Sports Scholarships
Up to 10 Sports Scholarships are awarded annually.  Most scholarships carry fee remission of 10%, although larger awards are sometimes made. Candidates will spend a day at Shrewsbury, during which they will be evaluated in their chosen sports and a variety of other fitness, agility and decision-making tests.  Sports Scholars are expected to play a full part in the sporting life of the School during their time at Shrewsbury.

Sir Michael Palin All-Rounder Scholarships
Up to 10 Sir Michael Palin All-Rounder Scholarships are awarded annually.  Most scholarships carry fee remission of 10%, although larger awards are sometimes made.  Candidates will be assessed in four equally-weighted areas: two specialist areas selected from Sport, Music, Drama and either Art or DT; an interview with a senior member of Shrewsbury School staff; and an IQ test and short written exercise.

Notes:

  1. The winner of any Scholarship must also reach a satisfactory standard in Common Entrance, the Academic Scholarship Examination, or the Shrewsbury School 13+ examination before entering the School.
  2. When children are successful in more than one category of scholarship (academic, art, design & technology, drama, music, sports, Sir Michael Palin scholarship), the financial arrangements associated with the scholarship which carries the highest level of fee remission will prevail.

Scholarship assessments take place during the 12 months prior to entry:
