'Symphonic Sundays'

A chance to learn and play at weekends with other young musicians in the newly formed Shrewsbury Children’s Orchestra.

Exciting repertoire and great coaching in a nurturing environment. The chance to meet and play with other young musicians of a similar standard. Minimum entry level requirement Grade 3 or above.

'Symphonic Sundays' has been set up to support and nurture young talented musicians from the locality. The only entry requirement is that your son / daughter has taken Grade 3 on their instrument.

There will be three Sunday sessions running from 2pm-5pm in the Maidment Building at Shrewsbury School during the academic year 2019/20. If your child is successful in gaining a place in the orchestra, then rehearsal dates are:

  • Sunday 29th September 2019
  • Sunday 26th January 2020
  • and Sunday 17th May 2020.

It is expected that s/he will do their very best to attend all three sessions in order to gain a sense of progression throughout the academic year.

The sessions are entirely free to attend, and have been supported by Shrewsbury School, and will be jointly run by John Moore (Director of Music) and Maria McKenzie (Assistant Director of Music). There will also be specialist input from other professional musicians, which will support the work and aims of the 'Symphonic Sundays' programme.

Music will be carefully chosen to give the students the experience of playing core repertoire, as well as some very enjoyable well-known favourites.

Each session will include both full orchestra rehearsals and sectionals culminating in an informal performance at 4.30pm each Sunday. The emphasis is very much on developing enthusiasm and a love for orchestral playing, which we hope will be inspiring to a generation of local young musicians.

If you are interested in your son / daughter applying for a place, please fill in the application form below and we will be in touch very soon to let you know whether you have been successful with your application or not.

We will also construct a reserve place list if the demand for places exceeds the numbers we can cater for.
