Symphonic Sundays

Shrewsbury School crest

Exciting repertoire and great coaching in a nurturing environment. The chance to meet and play with other young musicians of a similar standard. Minimum entry level requirement Grade 3 or above.

'Symphonic Sundays' has been set up to support and nurture young talented musicians from the locality. The only entry requirement is that your son / daughter has taken Grade 3 on their instrument.

Following the success of last year, we are pleased to continue with Symphonic Sundays Sinfonia - an orchestra for young musicians working up to grade 3 level, as long as they can confidently play and read 5 notes. Rehearsals will be from 12-1 on the same dates in the Maidment below.

For the 2023/24 academic year we are planning the normal four Sunday sessions running from 2pm-5pm in the Maidment Building at Shrewsbury School. If your child is successful in gaining a place in the orchestra, our first rehearsal date will be:

  • Sunday 15th October
  • Sunday 4th February
  • Sunday 12th May
  • Sunday 9th June

In addition, we would like to host a Gala Concert on Sunday 16th June in the Alington Hall.

Press play on the video below to watch an excerpt from the Gala Concert in 2022.

It is expected that s/he will do their very best to attend all three sessions in order to gain a sense of progression throughout the academic year. However, if your child has not been able to attend the first session, it may still be possible for them to join the orchestra. Please use the form below to submit an application.

You will not need to re-register if your child wishes to continue next year, please email Maria McKenzie if you wish to be taken off the mailing list.

The sessions are entirely free to attend, and have been supported by Shrewsbury School, and will be run by Maria McKenzie (Director of Music). There will also be specialist input from other professional musicians, which will support the work and aims of the 'Symphonic Sundays' programme.

Music will be carefully chosen to give the students the experience of playing core repertoire, as well as some very enjoyable well-known favourites. Music will be sent out in advance (so please include your address on the form below).

Each session will include both full orchestra rehearsals and sectionals culminating in an informal performance at 4.30pm each Sunday (restrictions dependent). The emphasis is very much on developing enthusiasm and a love for orchestral playing, which we hope will be inspiring to a generation of local young musicians.
