Head of Economics
Shrewsbury seeks to appoint a full-time Head of Economics to lead this successful, supportive, and collaborative Faculty.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent teaching and will have energy and enthusiasm to lead this important academic discipline. The post could suit a current subject leader or an experienced teacher seeking to take the next step in their career in one of the country’s leading boarding schools. The successful candidate will teach a reduced timetable commensurate with the requirements of the role and will also be expected to contribute to the co-curricular and pastoral life of a thriving boarding school.
Economics enjoys a strong reputation at Shrewsbury and is an increasingly popular subject at A Level with typically around 100 students across the Lower and Upper Sixth taking the subject. Pupils achieve excellent Public Examination results, with a number of leavers each year going on to pursue Economics-related disciplines at university, including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and other domestic and international universities.
The Economics Faculty is based in Hodgson Hall, an exceptional and modern teaching space. The Faculty is very well-resourced and has a supportive and experienced team of six teachers, who seek to give pupils an insight into issues and problems that affect us all. Recent case studies covered include the effects of Globalisation, Brexit, austerity, Quantitative Easing, Climate Change, pandemics and inequality. Teachers answer questions through discussions and by developing and applying theoretical economic principles in a rigorous and impartial manner. All teachers champion student-led activities such as The Economics Society, publication of the ‘Shrewsbury Economist’ magazine and our annual Economics Conference.
