Sir Laurie is Independent Adviser to The Prime Minister on Ministerial Standards.
Laurie has had a wide-ranging career in the financial, charity and public sectors.
He is currently an adviser to Evercore, the global investment bank, and Chair of The City of London Investment Trust plc, one of London’s oldest publicly listed investment funds. He has been actively involved with the heritage sector for nearly 30 years, having been successively Deputy Chair of The National Trust, Chair of English Heritage and Chair of Historic England (where he was closely involved in the restoration of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings). He is currently chair of The Heritage of London Trust.
He was appointed to the public office of Independent Adviser to the Prime Minister by Rishi Sunak in December 2022 and has continued in the role, with additional responsibilities, under Sir Keir Starmer. The term of his appointment, which is not party political, is for five years and not renewable.
He will talk about what this role involves in practice, why standards of conduct matter, why (irrespective of their political preferences) those who participate in public life generally deserve more respect and why aspiring politicians should be encouraged.
