As part of Shrewsbury’s programme of Partnerships and Community Engagement, a pupil volunteering group has begun regular visits to a local care home for the elderly, bringing conversation, laughter and companionship to residents.

Each week, the group spends time chatting with residents and running themed quizzes designed to spark memories and encourage interaction. Recent topics have ranged from music and film to the Royal Family, inspiring lively discussion and plenty of smiles.

Reflecting on her experience, Helena T (V, MSH)said:

“I really enjoyed volunteering at the care home for the elderly, as each visit gave us the chance to connect with the residents in a fun and meaningful way. We always prepared quizzes to keep everyone engaged, and this week’s theme was the royal family, which sparked lots of interesting conversations and memories. A highlight of the day was meeting a former teacher who used to be the head of biology at our school—it felt special to share that connection and see how our worlds crossed in such an unexpected place.”

This volunteering initiative reflects Shrewsbury’s commitment to kindness, service, and community connection, core values within the school’s whole person education model. By building relationships across generations, pupils are discovering that service is not only about giving time, but also about learning, listening, and finding shared humanity in the stories of others.
